My Thoughts About Being In PR!

That's me on the left, with a very cool online media personality!

That’s me on the left, with a very cool online media personality!

Hi everyone! I am Winnie! Something about myself: I love theme parks and would hope to get on all the rides at Six Flags one day and conquer my fear of heights! Shopping is my way of relieving stress and on weekends, you can either find me at the malls or cooped up in my room binging on American dramas (Scandal is the current drama of my life).

Since joining Epic, I have been quickly learning the ropes of working in a PR agency including how to write effective press releases and media pitches. Of course, in a PR agency, pitching and enabling media interviews is one of the key things that we do for our clients, and so I was glad to be given the opportunity to be involved in obtaining media interviews for a healthcare client.  As a result, I got to work with doctors and health professionals as well as interact with journalists who often can ask very probing questions.

This particular healthcare program was very interesting and we learnt a lot about men’s health in the process.  The results were several media interviews held at the lounge of Pan Pacific Orchard. We even managed to get the doctor on a live radio talk show that lasted an hour and listeners were able to dial in with questions. It was thrilling!

The best part for me was seeing the published articles on the various newspapers after the interviews, which gave me a huge sense of accomplishment!

I am still exploring Public Relations but so far, I like what I am doing! After several months in Epic, I have learnt so much from my colleagues and managers, and I am actually having a lot of fun, one word to sum it up and it has been said before , but Epic PR is – epic!  Alright, I gotta head back to work now! See you all soon 🙂

A Day in the Life (of a PR Executive)

Hi y’all! I’m Allison, an account executive at EPIC PR. To start, here are a few things about me – I love The Beatles (too much), I play the ukulele and the guitar, I love food and shopping, and someday I hope to travel the world. It took me a while to narrow down exactly what I wanted to do, but once I decided on Public Relations, there was no going back.

There’s really no other field quite like PR, as I’ve come to learn. Every day since I’ve joined EPIC PR, I’ve been exposed to a new facet of the business. From meeting with clients, to drafting pitches, to attending an event, there hasn’t been a boring or repetitive moment. Things are always done for good reasons, with visible results.

I also love that the EPIC work environment encourages us to embrace independence, even as we make sure to stay accountable to the firm. On a daily basis, we are pushed to exercise good judgment and common sense, skills that too often are given less credit than they really deserve.

Another thing I like about PR is how it expands our general knowledge. With every new client that comes our way, we do our research on their industry to make sure that we provide the best service we can for them.

I still have much to learn about PR, of course, and I’m definitely looking forward to experiencing even more aspects of it. I once read in a book that communication is the crossroad of all other disciplines. And boy, am I glad that I’m right at this junction with (the undeniably epic) EPIC PR.

Here’s Zhen Rong

bio_pic_zrHello everyone! My name is Zhen Rong and I’m the newest addition and most unique (only guy) addition to the EPIC team at EPIC PR. Working at EPIC PR has been a hugely eye-opening experience and I am grateful for the opportunities that come with meeting new clients and media people.

Of particular interest to me is seeing how our boss pitches to potential clients. Having never been in a pitch/new business meeting before, this really opened my eyes as to how this whole thing usually goes down. The back and forth as well as on the spur of the moment question and answer is really enlightening. While preparation for meeting any client is definitely key, some clients just do not openly publicize specific information with regards their core services and products on their websites and being able to give appropriate answers and advice in the heat of the moment is essential.

One other thing that did not surprise me is how little what we actually learn in school is relevant in the real world. Although I have heard many people tell me this to be the case, it is still somewhat frightening that we spend so much money on educating ourselves in a specific industry only to have very little of what goes on in the classroom be of any real use. Either that or maybe my school was just lousy.

But otherwise, it has been great learning and listening (or eavesdropping) in on office conversations and slowly, but (hopefully) surely, figuring out the who’s who of contacts.

One main takeaway that I have learnt in the past one month plus or so is that this is first and foremost a relationship business. While the other services (such as media monitoring) provided are most definitely substantial, the relationships between us and the media is what clients want us to leverage on and this is what earns us our daily bread.

Kia Ora from Epic’s newest addition!

Hey guys! I’m Gabriel and am absolutely thrilled to be the new kid on the Epic block!  A little about myself: I studied Film, Communications and Politics in New Zealand, and I love diving and filmmaking.

Gabriel – Epic’s newest addition!

I’m quickly learning that as a PR consultant you get to wield the magic wand of perception. With thoughtful words, perfectly positioned pictures, morning music and a darn good set of brains behind the team, you can create wonders out of the branding. I knew right off the bat that Epic is where I can actually learn, and properly, about Public Relations with a great team of people who are constantly driven and inspiring.

Most recently, I had organized a photoshoot for one of our clients who is from the technology sector. It was unique in that it was a fashion shoot in an office space that might have been taken to be too star wars-like for a glamourous women’s magazine; instead, the exact opposite had happened and everything clicked into place. The clean, harsh white interior of the office only gave our beautiful client the best canvas against which to shoot. The futuristic decor reflected her career perfectly. The place as a whole was refreshing for the magazine’s team and they loved the clash of feminine frocks against the hacker incubator environment of numbers, codes and Boolean.

The shoot was finished ahead of schedule, everyone was fascinated and our client had a great time getting out of her pant suit and into a Max Mara gown. I learnt that with any creative enterprise you need to practice a level of audacity-in this case, pairing two unlikely subjects together.

Epic has only just revved its engine, so there’s a lot of things that are coming up in the near future. Between pitches in Trump-like board rooms, interviews and conferences, there is a lot of music video making, beer toasting and air-guitaring in the office which makes work having a ball.

Between you and me, Epic is definitively EPIC.

Pitching in for Epic PR

Hi Everyone!

ally lienMy name is Ally, and I am the latest addition to Epic PR as the Account Executive. First of all, some stuff about myself. My greatest love of all time is music, yes, EVEN before shopping. I love Queen, The Beatles (aww, yeah!), Guns’ n Roses’. On a day off, I am the one normally with the Nirvana tank top and the beer in hand

On my daring adventure to search for my ideal PR job, Google brought me to Epic PR while I was looking for a COMPLETE career switch from accounting, and I am glad I stumbled on Epic PR. Why Epic PR you may ask? Why not the large MNCs that can provide that career background that will put everyone else in awe?

Well, pioneering companies and individuals have my awe. The courage and spirit to set up one’s own company doesn’t come easy and that’s why Epic PR has got my interest. I believe at a certain point of our lives, we would inevitably say to our panel of friends… “One day, I am going to open my own bar!” (cue in “How I Met Your Mother”), or a version of that… but we never really get there because of this and that. But not for me, I am making a go at seizing my moment which is now, to join a company and learn first hand as it builds the business from the ground up from an entrepreneur who has the courage to bet on herself. The thing about startup companies that really grab my attention is the open sea of opportunities. Epic PR is able to give me what I was looking for, to be involved in the actual game, working on the business, instead of just being another benchwarmer.

I have not regretted this choice of joining Epic PR one bit. I have been thrown right into action, making client visits, talking to journalists and meeting people, important, inspiring, lovely people, all the while gaining incredible, intelligent insights on the PR processes. My first few months at Epic is indeed as the name says it all, epic and I have been doing proper PR works that involves the word – “pitch”.

That’s it from me for now, back to work. Will post more soon!

An Epic Beginning

Welcome to the Epic blog!

New PR Agency in SingaporeWhen we first started our PR consultancy six months ago, if you were to tell us that we would have the kind of quality clients we have now, I would not have quite believed you. Not to say that we didn’t think we could win the clients that we currently have today, but more that we did not think we could have grown this fast, so soon, but we were wrong.  Today, Epic PR is grateful for the momentum that it is enjoying, thanks largely to a savvy community of marketers and PR professionals who support our venture from day one. It is this same maturing body of PR practitioners who have collectively lifted the standard of public relations to where it is today in the Asia Pacific region, one that I am so honoured and humbled to be a part of.

The Epic blog is going to be an evolving space where my team and I will be posting ideas, thoughts, links and images that move us on any give day. Most of the time, it will be PR related, other times, well, you are just going to have to wait and see 🙂

Thank you for visiting our website and for being a part of our Epic journey.
